Fertigation

What is it?

It is a way to fertilize your turfgrass through your irrigation system. This method helps prevent polluting chemicals, found in fertilizers, from entering the lakes.

Why use fertigation?

University of Florida’s research has shown that turfgrass is healthier and more disease and pest resistant when small amounts of nitrogen are used on a more frequent basis. Soil testing also indicates that Central Florida soils have abundant phosphorus. Phosphorus in lakes promotes the growth of algae and results in algae blooms and pea-green lakes. Fertigation delivers small amounts of nitrogen fertilizer, without phosphorus, each time the irrigation system operates. Testing has proven that the greatest amount of nutrient movement is when the soil is saturated. Therefore, a rain sensor is used to disengage the system after a large rain event, allowing the saturated soil to "dry out" before additional water is added.

What equipment is needed?

A 30 gallon plastic tank, some siphon hose, four check valves, a few fittings and connections, a patio stone, a rain sensor, and phosphorus free fertilizer. The tank will be connected to the main pvc pipe exiting the irrigation pump used to draw lakewater. A drawing of the system is found below these questions.

How much does it cost?

The total installed cost is less than $200. Before installation, apply for the City of Maitland's $25 gift certificate, toward the purchase of your first quantity of phosphorus free fertilizer.

Where do I buy the equipment and who does the installation?

Parker Lumber Co. in Maitland supplies the Rid O’ Rust siphoning system, the fertilizer, and some of the parts you will need. Home and Commercial Irrigation stocks the Mini-Clik rain sensor and the other fittings. Jim’s Plumbing and Irrigation Co., 407-679-4173, will provide all parts and labor for the installation. Parker Lumber Company, 407-644-3600, sells 11-0-5 liquid phosphorus-free fertilizer in reusable plastic containers. It is the sole supplier of liquid phosphorus free fertilizer in the Maitland-Winter Park area.

Can this system be used for weed killers and pesticides also?

No. It is to be used for fertilizer only.

Will my turfgrass need additional nutrients?

No. All the essential nutrients needed by turfgrass are delivered by this system.

Will flowering ornamentals get all their essential nutrients?

No. You may need to fertilize your ornamentals once a year with a phosphorus containing compound to promote flowering.

Are there any turfgrass management companies that use phosphorus free fertilizers?

Yes.  Call Middleton Lawn & Pest Control at 407-648-8998.   Massey Green Up, TruGreen-ChemLawn, Environmental Pest and Lawn Services, and Walker Chemical and Exterminating Co. also offer liquid phosphorus free fertilizer applications.
