No permit is required to mechanically remove aquatic vegetation up to 50 feet along the shoreline (or 50% of the shoreline whichever is less). Muck as deep as 3 feet (or until you reach sand, whichever is first) can be removed without a permit, assuming it is removed from the same location as the vegetation being removed. However, if muck is being removed, you will be required to provide a turbidity barrier to protect the lake's clarity. For more information and specific requirements contact the Lakes Management Coordinator at 407-539-6203. Permitting is required for larger areas than described above. The homeowner will also be required to revegetate the lakefront with lake friendly native plants.Any herbicide application requires a permit. Permits are FREE and may be obtained by contacting the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Invasive Plant Office at 407-275-4004. With the permit, you will also receive some publications and manuals on aquatic plant management and revegetation. ORDINANCES: Maitland City ordinance #935 prohibits the discharge of lawn clippings, leaves, branches, silt, construction materials and heavy solids into any stormwater system, canal, or lake in Maitland. Drain markers have been installed on drain inlets to remind residents that the stormwater flows into the lake.

BERMS AND SWALES: The use of a swale or berm is generally regarded as one of the most effective methods of restricting stormwater from carrying sediments and pollutants into a waterway. Although Florida state law now requires that all new lakefront homes include environmental swales or berms, most of Maitland's older lakefront homes have neither. Consequently, run-off from the driveway, roof, pool deck and other impervious areas flow directly into the lakes, carrying with it harmful pollutants.
